Parenting for Service Members and Veterans

As a parent, I realize that no military or personal success can compensate for failure in the home. Recently the Department of Defense  in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs came out with a FREE program designed for parents in the Military. The program is called Parenting for Service Members & Veterans and is a free online course providing military & veteran parents with strategies to improve their parenting skills.
There are six modules online at their site militaryparenting.org. I looked through one of them this morning and I was impressed. They have interactive tools for military and veteran parents that will help them reconnect with their families and build closer relationships with their children. They use stories and videos from real veteran and military families.

All of this is free and you can do on your own schedule. I strongly believe that the building block of a strong society are strong families.

The Modules include:
  • Coming Back into the Family from Deployment
  • Promoting Positive Parent Child Communications
  • Helping your Child with Difficult Emotions and Behaviors
  • Positive approach to Discipline
  • Managing Stress & Emotions as a Parent
  • Parenting with Emotional and Physical Challenges

Detailed Description of their service from their facebook page
Parenting for Service Members and Veterans is a free online course that provides tools for military and veteran parents that will help them reconnect with their families and build closer relationships with their children. Using stories from real veteran and military families, videos, interactive activities and original curriculum developed by leading experts, this Web-based course helps parents to learn how to address both everyday parenting problems and family issues unique to military experience. Veteran and service member parents can find practical advice on topics such as promoting positive interactions with your children, disciplining your child, managing parental stress, and parenting in the face of personal challenges.
The Parenting course, as well as a Problem Solving course (www.startmovingforward.org), were both built as part of a joint-agency effort to expand access to mental health resources to Veterans, Service Members, and their families
