U-Haul Military Discount (10-15%)

This post focuses on U-Hauls Military Discount. To view our post on all truck rental companies, click here: Military Discounts - Rental Truck Companies

UPDATE (JUNE 20, 2016) - Multiple readers have been commenting that U-Haul is currently NOT offering any type of discount. They have done this in the past when there has been high demand and no need to offer a discount. I wouldn't waste your time calling the number below given all the reports that no discounts are being given. I would still go online and check U-Haul, Budget, and Penske's price and compare them to make sure you get the best deal. In my past experience Budget has typically had the best price between the three companies.

U-Haul does not offer an "official" military discount. However, you can call the Sales Department at 800-468-4285 and they will often work out some type of discount. Their sales department is allowed to offer 10-15% off some reservations. Some of their representatives will give you that discount and some will not. Others have said that they will give you the discount but you must make the reservation at that moment. This 10-15% discount only applies if you are traveling one way (for example Phoenix to San Antonio). It typically doesn't work for "in-town" moves.

Sometimes this number (800-468-4285) will not directly connect to the sales department so always ask to be transferred to the sales department. They are the ONLY ones that can hook you up with a 10-15% discount. I used this a couple months ago when moving from West Phoenix to East Phoenix. It saved me about $15 last time on a $100 reservation.

If you are renting from U-Haul and are picking up and dropping off at the same location, there is no corporate discount. However, the corporate officer on the phone did mention that if you ask they will commonly give a Local Military Discount. U-Haul does offer a free month of storage to military members.

Another Company that gives Military Discounts is Budget. In my experience Budget is often cheaper than U-Haul. Budget has a 20% Military Discount. In order to get the discount your will need to use the promo code "usmilord". This will give you 20% off. They will also price match U-Haul if they are cheaper.

  1. Good for Uhaul. I will be going with Penske for my next move. Not only was the initial estimate over $200 cheaper, the truck gets better gas mileage (amounts to about $40 in savings), they give 10% off if you reserve online plus another 10% off for military upon pickup. Not to mention if you actually do the math with the truck dimensions, the Penske truck actually has more useful cargo space.

  2. I spoke with the Uhaul representative and they said that they do offer a discount, but not on the car trailer alone. She stated that if I rented a truck she would be able to give a discount for active duty military.

  3. I called today and got a truck for a one-way rental and they gave me 25% off, but only after asking if they had a discount available.

  4. Most definitely go with Penske. Uhaul quoted me at $2100 for a ten foot truck and trailer. I called Penske and not only did I get a 20% discount on their rate, but for a 16ft truck and trailer it was only $1254. Will definitely recommend Penske to anyone who asks me.

  6. Uhaul is the worst company to deal with. They kept me on hold for over an hour said I would get a 20% discount then said they couldn't process it until the truck was returned and it would only be 10%, They were very rude. The associate was Vanessa Serna and her boss Rogerio Arellano was even worse. Beyond frustrated, Relocating with the Navy from Arizona to Port Orchard. DO NOT USE UHAUL SERVICES

    2. Called U-Haul and apparently they have stopped all discounts according to the rep. That's the benefit of being a near monopoly.

  12. This is particularly useful as military members tend to move around. Every little bit you can save helps out. I have found it is wise to ask all merchants if they offer a military discount. Some do not post about it, but will give it to you simply for asking.

  13. They will not offer one for a car carrier alone, and I have used them one other move. The girl I spoke to was push and only concerned about getting a credit card #. RUDE!

  15. Just called today for a local trip. The guy was extremely helpful. Was going to do a pick-up/drop-off at the same location (which military rates do not apply for) and he recommended we do a one way from a very close-by location. Offered 20% off which included 30 miles and 24 hr use of the truck.

  17. I had an existing reservation. I called straight up and they said no military discount; never have, never will. Then (using the instructions), I called back and asked to be transferred to Sales. Someone applied the discount to my order and will be received upon pickup.

  20. Spoke with them this morning. As of Monday, November 25, 2015, no more discounts are available.

  21. Uhaul did not Honor a Military Discount. The sales rep said, " Uhaul is not doing discounts at this time".

  23. So as of 12/29/15 Uhaul is refusing to give military discounts, but they are still about 60% cheaper than Penske even with Penske's military discount. Uhual said $1300 - Penske said $3500 for mine.

  24. I contacted Uhaul and was told that their military discount has been discontinued as of "a few months ago". Not really sure why.

  25. Called today and was told UHaul is not currently running ANY discounts, to include military. I was told "it is based on supply and demand"...... What????? So much for honoring the men and women who serve this country..... If I had any other options, I would use them but unfortunately UHaul is the only moving company that has what I currently need.

    1. Sad to see the Military is not in demand these days. Sheesh.

  26. I think it's because WWP (wounded warrior project) gets the uhaul discount now and offers it to most military and veteran families. Hope this helps fellow soldiers and their spouses in the future.

  27. Have only used uhaul....NEVER had any issues. When we could not get into our home 1000 miles from where we came from they offered another free month of storage. We had 4 storage units. Very good to us. Same with our son in the army. The nicer you are the nicer others will be as well!

  28. I also benefited of a 10% discount because I found this post. I`m so grateful! Thank you.

  29. Made a reservation yesterday and no discounts are being offered by Uhaul.

  30. Spoke with Uhaul customer service today and they no longer offer military discount!

  31. Yes, U-Haul gone cheap. I am moving to Alaska, unfortunately, only U-Haul store up there. There needs to be a serious competitor against U-Haul there.

    1. Dealing with the same issue right now. Only U-Haul will offer one-way trucks to Fairbanks. So much for shopping around! Still going to ask for a discount when I get my firm move date.

  32. Just called and was told they were not offering a discount right now.

  33. I called and was told Public Relations deals with Wounded Warrior Project and sales/reservations has no special rates or discounts for military. Sure, they'll get publicity from dealing with a corrupt organization like WWP, but they can't be bothered to help actual service members and veterans. SMH.

  34. Does Uhaul offer any discount in October? Where can I find their latest updates in terms of discounts?

  35. Also saved 10% when we told them we are an active duty family, although it was called a "business" discount. Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. We asked for sales, and the rep confirmed she was sales and reservations. She said they could give us a 10% "business discount" because we are doing a one way move. Active duty. Thanks for the tip!

  37. Called the number above and got sales. Instead of answering questions about military discounts she pushed a 17' truck on me at the standard rate when I only need the pull-behind. Eventually she answered saying the military discount couldn't be included on an "in-town" move and that it was reserved for out of state moves.

  38. Called the number, 800-468-4285, pressed 1 for moving trucks/trailers and the nice gentleman was able to give me 10% off the truck rental, making the 26' truck go from $849 to $764.10.
