USO Review - Chicago - O'Hare Airport

The Chicago O'Hare airport (ORD) has 2 USO lounges. One is inside security and the other is outside of security. This is actually really nice to have one inside and outside of security. I didn't want to have to go outside of security and I heard that the one inside security was better, so of course I went there.

2x points until Jan 15 with USAA Mastercard

When you sign into USAA you can click on the "My Offers" tab. This opens up several offers for loans, credit cards, insurance, etc.

The best offers are always the credit card bonuses. For example I've signed up for 5% cash back on gas for a year, 2x points on gas and groceries. These compounded so I was getting 8% back on gasoline for awhile.

The latest offer is "Get double rewards points on all your purchases when you spend $2000 or more by Jan 15" (see image below) These offers are targeted so you might have different offers in your account.

Parenting for Service Members and Veterans

As a parent, I realize that no military or personal success can compensate for failure in the home. Recently the Department of Defense  in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs came out with a FREE program designed for parents in the Military. The program is called Parenting for Service Members & Veterans and is a free online course providing military & veteran parents with strategies to improve their parenting skills.
There are six modules online at their site militaryparenting.org. I looked through one of them this morning and I was impressed. They have interactive tools for military and veteran parents that will help them reconnect with their families and build closer relationships with their children. They use stories and videos from real veteran and military families.

Chase Bank - Waives all fees for Active Duty Military

Chase is my second favorite bank after USAA. I recently found out that Chase Bank will waive all credit card fees, late fees, and all other fees for Military members on Active Duty. It is very easy to apply and their customer service is excellent from my past experience.
Here's what you need to do:
  1. Call Chase Military Banking at 1-877-469-0110. This is a Military only line and takes calls 24/7. Awesome!
  2. Tell them you are Active Military. They will ask you to send them proof like a copy of your orders. Send them your information via fax or email.
  3. Wait a couple of weeks and they will send you a letter in the mail. (I have posted the letter they sent me in the mail below)
  4. Enjoy FEE FREE service. I have the IHG Priority Club Credit Card and the $49 annual fee was reimbursed immediately once they verified military status. They also have their Military Banking that waives all checking and savings account fees.

Phoenix Sky Harbor USO

The Phoenix USO is one of my favorites.

Here's why:

  • Out of all the USO's I've been to, this one has the most free stuff. LOTS of food, lots of candy, lots of drinks, not to mention toiletry items, keepsakes and other random misc. stuff
  • The USO workers are SO friendly and helpful
  • Lots of space, I've never felt crammed like I sometimes do at other USO's. I've visited about 5 times and I'm always pretty much the only one there.
  • Brand new!

COSTCO now offering FREE Military day pass also!

  • Costco's should now be honoring free Military passes during the government shutdown.
  • I spoke with the general manager of Arizona stores and she said that Costco HQ have notified all stores nationally that this offer should be honored everywhere. Some people are still saying that their store has no idea about this so it would be a good idea to call first because you go there. (Thanks BJ)
  • Find the nearest Costco location by visiting Costco.com/WarehouseLocator
  • If they have not heard of this, have them put you on hold and let them call the Corporate office to verify. Then you come into the store with your military ID card and ask for a shopping pass. They call it a 99. (Thanks Patty)

Indoor Kart Racing

Now trendy in the Northeast is indoor go-karting, where patrons pay a premium to race in electric karts that top speeds over 50mph!  You can take advantage of a solid discount if you present your valid military ID when you register for a race.  There are many independently-owned facilities popping up and the racing fees may vary by location.  Here is an example using the fees of a track close to me:

FasTrax Raceway
Regular 14-lap adult race $23, with military ID only $18
Membership - includes 2 free races, 1 free birthday race, and a T-shirt for $50, with military ID $30

A quick Google search of other indoor karting facilities shows at least one location in most major cities.  Keep an eye out for a location in your hometown and add it to the comments so we may add facilities as they open!

Free Dental Care - Sept. 11, 2014

On September 11th, 2014 Freedom Day USA has organized and partnered with many businesses to offer free dental care and other services to "members of the military".  This is the first year of this annual event organized by Dr. Martino. Because it's a new event, the following years will have more business partners to benefit more people. It is planned to occur on the 2nd thursday of September every year.

HERE is the link to the interactive map with the businesses that are participating. I hope there is a provider that lives near you!

  • The website doesn't give much guidance as to whether you have to be active duty or not or if family members also qualify. When you call to set your appointment, you can ask them about the qualifications. I think it may vary by location.
  • Because it is only one day of free dental care, the services that will be provided will be things that can be done in one appointment like cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, etc.
As a dental student, I think this program is especially cool and I hope to participate as a provider one day. Thanks for all those that are involved in this effort!
